細味歌詞

《貝隆夫人》（Evita）可算是英國音樂劇鬼才作曲家Andrew Lloyd Webber（安德魯·洛伊·韋伯）和作詞家Tim Rice（提姆．萊斯）的代表作之一，近日在香港公演。這套音樂劇圍繞阿根廷第一夫人 Eva Peron（伊娃貝隆）的傳奇一生。最出名的曲目當然要數 Don’t Cry For Me Argentina，在劇中貝隆夫人透過這首名曲向阿根庭民眾訴說自己的高低跌宕。

貝隆夫人的打扮雍容華貴，近乎奢侈，在此曲中就用了這兩句表達：”All you will see is a girl you once knew, although she’s dressed up to the nines — At sixes and sevens with you.”

To the nines是一句英文諺語，解盡最大力度，臻於完美；英文近似的說法有To perfection。日常英語通常都是好似歌詞般”dressed up to the nines”或只是”dressed to the nines”。

At sixes and sevens解亂狀、或極其混亂的狀態。歌詞內At sixes and sevens with you是指貝隆夫人奢華的打扮和貧困的阿根廷人民格格不入、極不協調。在歌詞中At sixes and sevens和At odds的意思類近，同樣解不符、不協調。

細味Tim Rice這句歌詞 “she’s dressed up to the nines — At sixes and sevens with you.”，當中有數字對（to the nines對at sixes and sevens），也有貝隆夫人的完美打扮相對阿根廷人民凌亂的貧窮狀。

隨後的 “[I] couldn’t stay all my life down at heel; Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun” 這個Imagery（意象）亦用得漂亮。 Down at heel解窮困潦倒。歌詞字面解「我不願一生窮困潦倒，終日呆望窗外，不見天日」；Looking out of the window這一句用窗外的風景借喻布宜諾斯艾利斯的五光十色，staying out of the sun則反映了貝隆夫人一生一直追求處於鎂光燈下，不甘退居幕後，寂寂無名。
